We have just delivered two VX1’s to two South Australian educational facilities and we are about to send another one out to a major university in the United States. There will be some very excited students (and teachers) over the next few weeks. These students will be able to display 3D content right in front of their eyes and create their own images, animations and games for the displays. We can’t wait to see what amazing things the students will create.

I love it, am I correct in assuming this uses the Persistence of Vision phenomenon to create a coherent 3D image in the viewer’s brain? I have a product that also uses this effect, and the “milkiness” of the display volume caused by ambient light illuminating the kinetic substrate makes me think you have a very fast moving surface being illuminated periodically by a strobing projector of some sort.
If this is correct, then the mechanical feat of raising and lowering this surface fast enough for a non-strobey refresh rate (i’d imagine 40 Hz or greater?) is extremely impressive.
Is it loud? from personal experience, mechanisms this large moving that fast are hard to design in such a way that they operate without producing substantial sound pollution.
Either way, ingenious solution to the hologram problem. I’ll be your first customer once you’re able to bring manufacturing costs down and enter the broader market at a lower price point.
Hey Brandon, reasonably close on your assessment! It’s a great mix of software and hardware with some great engineering to be able to keep it quiet and efficient. We are using a resonant frequency to only be driving the screen a few millimeters but getting 8cm of volume on the z-axis. Stay tuned though, this is only the beginning 🙂
