Example – Conversion of a VDB simulation to mesh and displaying it as a volumetric animation.
With this experiment, we looked at how to display true volumetric fire simulations on the Voxon VX1 volumetric display. The fire simulation was downloaded from jangafx.com as a series of VDB files. We then used the new “volume to mesh” modifier in Blender 2.92 to threshold the VDB file and convert it to an animated mesh. This was then exported as an OBJ sequence and played on the VX1.
This was fun to do and a surprisingly quick and simple process. Once we had decided what files we wanted to download and combine, Blender made it reasonably simple to create our cute little fire breathing dragon!
